Communist, Crazy, Elon Musk, Right-Wing, Twitter

If you want to know where the world’s crazies go for recreation, sign on to Twitter for an hour or two. It will become abundantly clear.

As an aside, it’s still Twitter for me, and not the single letter name that its new owner Elon Musk has decided for it. More about Mr. M. later.

Yesterday I responded, almost in passing, to a man who said that Canada and the US were very nearly Communist dictatorships. I suggested that he was wrong, and that he might visit China, or North Korea, to see what a real Communist dictatorship looks like. He replied that he thought I was being myopic, presented ten reasons why he though he was right, and suggested that he could send me more information if I was interested. Well, the ten reasons revolved around suggesting policies of right-wing governments are Communist, guns make people free, and God should be part of any practical government, and by that he meant the Christian god.

Being a reasonable fellow, I took time counter each of his points, without being rude, and point out how his assumptions were somewhat off the mark. I also suggested that without a revolution, both the US and Canada were never going to be Communist, which of course they won’t be. He responded to that with six new posts, all with more detailed parts of his manifesto, and threw in some ghastly conspiracy theories about the World Health Organization (WHO), and the nefarious intent of Justin Trudeau and Joe Biden. When people start telling me that the WHO have some secret plan to take over the world then they’ve lost me, they’ve gone off into fairy land and will never be able to conduct a sensible debate. I read what he’d posted, then blocked him, which is something you have to do when confronted with such ridiculous theories.

That was just one person, and there are thousands, probably millions, more. Sheesh.

It doesn’t help that since Musk has taken over, he’s allowed the algorithms that decide what you see to lurch to his own, twisted, populist worldview. Every day I see posts from people like my friend I mentioned earlier, posts from random right-wing media outlets, ring-wing journalists and right-wing politicians, all of which are summarily blocked, but still they come. It’s curious that I never see any posts from random centrists or left of centre people. Something from Wab Kinew, or Sean Fraser, people like that, but they don’t appear. Yes. I can search those good people out, but why do I get posts dropped into my feed that are clearly counter to my personal views? I’m not the only one who has noticed this, either.

I get it, Twitter is largely free to use, I can disable the ads., and I recognise that it’s not a democratic space, so I treat it accordingly, but the feeding of nonsense to more gullible people than I is something that perhaps needs to be balanced out somehow. It’s my contention that Twitter will collapse in on itself in the end anyway, because even now it’s beginning to look like a bit of a cesspool.

Should that happen, I wonder where the crazies would go?

Twitter is now my X

Elon Musk, Populists, Rightwing, Twitter

I’ve never been much of a fan of Twitter, but seeing that so many influential people (as opposed to the pond scum known as “Internet Influencers”) like to put their thoughts out there on a daily basis, I thought I’d have a go.

I am left-leaning politically, maybe physically as well, I don’t know, so I have “Followed” some people who I think I might find tolerable. Among them Jo Biden and Kamala Harris in the US, and Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh and Christia Freeland in Canada. All are centrists with a lean to the left, at least compared to the populists who occupy the news media these days.

People I don’t follow include Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor-Green in the US, and Pierre Poilievre and Marissa Lantsman in Canada, because they are all of that populist rightwing political genre mentioned above. It’s not that I don’t want to see stuff from them occasionally, but I don’t want my daily feed full of their nonsense.

Over the past three months I have had no posts at all come up on my feed from the politically friendly accounts I chose to follow. Not one. I go and look for their feeds and they’re churning tweets out daily. Hmmmm.

Over those same three months I have had daily tweets from all the people I don’t follow, all of whom have descended to the grotesque depths that Trump and Poilievre have been reaching into. I get updates from spineless fools like Ted Cruz, the Trump children, Mike Johnson, Dan Bongino and a host of other scurrilous US Trump apologists. From Canada I get Poilievre, Lantsman and even the vile trash that is the Toronto Sun. None of these accounts are people I follow.

I have resorted to blocking the worst of them because it’s the only way I can stop the flood. Are they replaced with tweets from people I actually follow? No, of course not, because now I get posts from other right-wing populists, all of whom I wouldn’t follow on Twitter in a month of Sundays.

If you’re ever in doubt that Elon Musk has seriously skewed the Twitter algorithms in favour of his favoured political stance, try it yourself, but be prepared for some awful, awful content.

I still dip into Twitter occasionally, search out people I follow (following is meaningless unless Elon approves, of course), and daily block more right-wing loons. Ah well, there are still the tweets from Canada’s foremost Trucking account to see, and I could watch bad driving videos all day.

Or “Why Do They Think I’m So Gullible?”

CONDITIONS OF USE NOT KNOWN, FEES MAY APPLY ON USE

WordPress announced my first “Like” for my revitalised blog, so naturally I was curious. Of course, I should have known that it wasn’t going to be from anyone interesting, but with a grim inevitability it was actually from someone touting a Get Rick Quick(ly) scheme. So, no interest in the blog, but plenty of interest in parting me from my money.

The Internet is packed with these people. At one end of the scale it’s a Nigerian Prince who needs you to send him $200 so that he can release $8,000,000 into your bank account (he’ll need those details of course), to the almost plausible ads where they quote returns and show grateful people’s testimony. The one thing that links all of these unsolicited fishing expeditions is that they require you to send them money. I don’t know about you, but I think that is the biggest red flag there is.

There will lots of these scam merchants out there who will tell me I’m missing out of a free fortune, all for the want of sending a stranger some money. The thing is, I can’t think of a single documented case where Joe Blow has sent off $200 to a stranger and made themselves a fortune. It doesn’t happen. I’ve seen the effects of some of these schemes first hand and the results for the unwitting are, to say the least painful.

I was wondering why people think I’d be so gullible as to fall for these scams. I’d imagine, though, that they wouldn’t waste their time if they didn’t get something from all the feelers they put out. It’s quite sad that people can be so desperate as to believe the lies these people spin, all in the chase for a quick and easy buck. There’s the rub, isn’t it? Quick and easy.

I’m quite content to continue ignoring all such approaches, not just in WordPress but pretty much all social media. At least when I get Twitter (Never to be called X) followers I can have a good laugh at all these nubile young women promising me not only fast and easy money, but love as well.

It’s my cynicism that keeps me healthy.
